We are very pleased to announce three new endowments that have been created in the UW Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (UW Ob-Gyn) thanks to the generosity and vision of our dedicated supporters. Each of these endowments will allow awardees annual funds to pursue academic work that would otherwise not be possible.
Lisa Barroilhet, MD, assistant professor in the UW Ob-Gyn Division of Gynecologic Oncology, was named the Dolores A. Buchler, MD, Faculty Fellow in Gynecologic Oncology. The fund was established by Dr. Buchler, a trailblazer and innovator who built what is now the UW Ob-Gyn Division of Gynecologic Oncology, and will support outstanding physicians and scientists in that same division.
Even early in her career, Dr. Barroilhet has demonstrated a dedication to treatment and research that will advance and honor Dr. Buchler’s remarkable legacy.
The fellowship is awarded to an outstanding faculty member as determined by the UW Ob-Gyn chair.
Eliza A. Bennett, MD, clinical assistant professor in the UW Ob-Gyn Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology, was named the recipient of the Dennis D. and Lynn F. Christensen Professorship in Family Planning. Dr. Dennis and Lynn Christensen have dedicated their lives to helping ensure that women have access to the full range of family planning health care, and their generosity and concern will continue with their remarkable establishment of the endowed professorship in family planning. The honor goes to the faculty member who is specifically responsible for medical student, resident, and fellow education in contraception, sterilization and pregnancy termination.
Like the professorship’s namesakes, Dr. Bennett is a great champion of access to and advancement of the full range of family planning health care for all women.
Appointment to the professorship is for a term of three years with reappointment at the discretion of the UW Ob-Gyn chair and the Dean of the School of Medicine of Public Health.
David M. Kushner, MD, professor and director of the UW Ob-Gyn Division of Gynecologic Oncology, was named the John M. and Jeanne C. Flesch Professor in Gynecologic Oncology. Jeanne Flesch has been a terrific advocate for funding research in the area of gynecologic cancers through her tireless work with the Sparkle of Hope event, and developed this professorship to honor a very close friend who died of ovarian cancer. John has also been a steadfast supporter of these efforts to raise awareness and funding for gynecologic cancer research.
Dr. Kushner has dedicated his life to not only caring for women who are diagnosed with gynecologic cancers, but also to research that greatly improves the quality of their lives.
This professorship is awarded for five years to an outstanding faculty member in the UW Ob-Gyn Division of Gynecologic Oncology, with potential for a second five year term.
Congratulations to all three on these well-deserved honors, and thanks once again to our generous supporters for helping to solidify the role of UW Ob-Gyn as leaders in family planning and women’s cancer care and research.
