Madison, Wisconsin - Ronald Magness, Kristi Herritz and Heidi Hakseth have been selected as the 2013-14 recipients of the University of Wisconsin School and Medicine and Public Health Faculty and Staff Equity and Diversity Awards.

Magness, winner of the faculty award, is the director of the Perinatal Research Research Laboratories and professor of obstetrics and gynecology, animal sciences, and pediatrics at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

The awards are meant to recognize those who promote equity and diversity in pursuit of the school’s missions to train clinicians and scholars to understand the needs of diverse individuals and groups; to study ethnic and racial disparities in health care; and to maintain an open, inclusive and respectful environment.

Magness' nominator, Dr. Laurel Rice, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, notes that he has an “unfaltering commitment to improving the education of underrepresented populations.” Magness is involved with many programs for students and trainees at all levels, from high school to graduate school.

Additionally, he has been instrumental in recruiting six minority faculty members to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and increasing minority enrollment in the Endocrinology and Reproductive Physiology Graduate Training Program to 25 percent.
