UW Women's Health Initiative
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Women's Health Initiative Clinical
Center in Middleton is one of 40 sites selected by the National Institute of
Health to participate in a nation wide study of women's health. This study is
focusing on strategies for preventing heart disease, breast and colorectal
cancer and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. These chronic diseases are
the major causes of death, disability and frailty in older women. It is the
goal of the Women's Health Initiative to include a diversity of American
women. There are over 3500 participants, ages 50 - 79 enrolled at the
Middleton site. For more information please call toll free at (800) 944-9472
or locally at (608) 827-1600.
The Division of Gynecologic Oncology
The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine
The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine engages in ongoing clinical research focusing on prenatal diagnosis (both in the first and second trimesters), and medical diseases of pregnancy. We are the lead center in two studies sponsored by the FDA: One evaluating the use of labetalol (an anti-hypertensive), and the other evaluating specific antibiotics during pregnancy. Other research related to hypertension focuses on the role of different enzymes in preeclampsia and the possible role of nitrous oxide donors in preventing hypertensive diseases in pregnancy. Some other investigations include the use of ultrasound (both 2D and 3D) in the first-trimester diagnosis of genetic or structural problems. Outcomes of diabetic pregnancies after treatment with different types of medical regimens are also under investigation.
